What Is Happening with Sweet Georgia Sound (from Facebook).

When you're a band that plays dance music you are often graced with some wonderful friends that are almost always present on the dance floor. We learned yesterday that one of our great friends, Marcia O'Connor, had passed from this life.

I remember a number of years ago when we were playing the November Big Band Day at the Chattanooga Market and seeing Marcia and Donald on the dance floor and finding out that they had gotten married the day before and had came to the market to do what they loved.

Another great memory of Marcia and Donald comes from Riverbend 2011, we performed on the Volkswagen Stage which was on the green across from the Coke Stage. Marcia and Donald's condo was behind that stage and I was able to see the 2 of them dancing to us on the balcony. After our performance the band was invited to their place for a Riverbend party which made a great evening even better.

Our vocalist, Melanie Willetts wrote a nice tribute and with her permission I'll share it.

Being a musician has afforded me the opportunity to meet a vast number of people from the Chattanooga area. Some have become familiar faces, as they attend so many of the events where we perform, but very few have become much more than acquaintances. I am honored that one lovely lady called me her friend.
No one brightened a room like Marcia O’Connor. Watching the petite, raven-haired beauty glide across the dance floor with her dashing husband, Donald, never failed to bring a smile to my face…and to my heart. Her grace and elegance was not, however, limited to her tangos and rhumbas; Marcia’s demeanor and disposition left no doubt that she was gentle, kind, strong, and very much in love.
I last saw Marcia and Donald at a small event in June where I was singing to a crowd of people who didn’t seem too terribly interested in a jazz combo. When this dynamic duo waltzed (quite literally) into the room, the entire atmosphere was transformed. Within seconds, they made their way to the dance floor and began twirling and spinning and dipping as only they could do. Gradually, other couples joined them, but not before taking a few moments to bask in the beauty of their dancing.
Later that evening, Marcia slipped up to me and asked if we could play their song, which I knew was “L-O-V-E”. It was not something that the combo had planned to perform, but I was not about to refuse. Just as I called the tune to the band, Donald stepped out of the room. The look on Marcia’s face was almost frantic as she scanned the hall to find her mate when the song began. He must have heard the music, however, because he quickly reappeared and they rushed to the dance floor. I will always remember the expression of adoration on their faces when they were dancing together.
While we had exchanged a few private messages on Facebook the following week, it was not until I saw a post less than a month ago that I learned that Marcia was not well. Even then, her photos and her words reflected nothing less than beauty and grace. Today, I learned that Marcia has far too soon left us. My heart is broken.
I will never sing “L-O-V-E” again without thinking of them.
I will never forget you, Marcia. Godspeed, my friend.

Yes, Godspeed Marcia, we love you and will miss you.
